Class: COR Graduated Early
Phil enlisted in the Navy in 1952 and entered
UDTRA shortly after boot camp. He was
assigned to Underwater Demolition Team
Three where he served until discharged in
1952. He saw action in the Korean war in the "Big
Ten".
After service, he was Recreation Supervisor
for the city of Los Angeles. He earned a BA in
Physical Education and retired after 28 years
with the city.
He was married 17 years, then remarried for
23 years to Laura A. They have one son Randy
and one grandchild. The couple resides in

WILLIAM J. GIANNOTTI, USN,
Training Class COR Graduated Early
Nicknamed "George" cause teammates
always pointed at Giannotti and said, "Let
George do it!" George (not Al) enlisted in
August 1943 in WII. After attending 1st Class
Divers school, he served on USS GREENLET
ASRio. Then he went to UDTRA and was
assigned to Underwater Demolition Team
Three, Twelve, and UDUONE in Sub-Ops and
T&E.
George retired in 1963 after 20 years service
and attended college two years. As a
commercial oil field diver, he served as
foreign operations manager and Texas coast
manager for diving companies. After 28
years, he retired in 1996,
Married to wife Toledo B. for 55 years, they
had a daughter Mary Bakesle, and a son
Michael. They now reside in Lake Jackson TX
at 112 Hyacinth, zip 77566-4614. Tele: 979-

LEGEND: "The 14 years I spent associating
with the teams was a thrilling experience.
Upon leaving the teams, I went into
commercial diving with companies
supporting the offshore oil industry and once
again traveled the world. As I got older, I went
into management and finally migrated from
foreign operations to managing the Texas
Gulf coast for oceaneering."

Stuart Sorg, USN
Training Class 10
LCK .Graduated 4/53
Captain Sorg entered the Naval Service in
January 1951 as an enlisted man. He served
with UDT-4 for four years and went on to
college at the University of Virginia where he
played football.
Later with some urging from Herb Clements
in SEAL Team Two in 1968 he became a 39 year
old Ensign and served with NavSpecWar Gru
Two with Detachment 208. After a month as
Ensign, he was promoted to LTJG. He
completed a study for Captain Weber that
eventually moved BUDS to California. He
served in the Contra wars at Tiger Island on
three occasions. He was a plank owner in
NavSpecWar Detachment 8 in Central
America in highly classified operations.
Also, he was involved in SDV's, diving and
salvage operations.
He has two sons and two daughters: Bill,
Brax, Ginger, and Jacqui and two grand
children. He resides at 3091 Lucaya St.,

MCPO ROBERT L. WITHEROW, USN
Training Class 6 LCK Graduated 1/51
Bob entered the Navy on July 7, 1946 and after boot camp served on USAT General A.W. Brcwster, the USAHS Comfort. After UDTRA, he was
assigned to Underwater Demolition Team Two, the on the staff CINCLANTFLT
and back to UDT 21. He also served in Special Boat Squadron Two.
With 36 and a half years service he retired on July 31, 1985. He graduated
from High School and has two years of technical training. He is a widower

LEGEND: "When I was 16 years old, I was running a pool room one summer and
working in the brickyard the following summer.
Fresh out of high school in 1946, I joined the Army. I was ordered to Camp
Polk, LA for basic training. Upon completion, I was assigned to Fort
Lewis, WA. The following spring I was assigned to USAT Gunther at Fort
Mason, San Francisco, CA. After a trip around various ports throughout the
Pacific, on return I was assigned to the USAHS Comfort. Then I was ordered
to Camp Stonemen, CA for processing out of the Army.
January 1948, I returned to Clymer, PA, my
hometown. I went on 52-20 (unemployment
aid) for about six months. I then went to a
technical school in Williamsport PA under
the GI Bill. At that time I joined the Naval
Reserves and made a two week cruise to the
Caribbean. In November, 1950 I was called to
active duty and ordered to USNAB Little Creek,
Norfolk, VA. I was assigned to Underwater
Demolition Team Two. Shortly after my
arrival, LCDR Hoyt asked if I wanted to go
though training on January i, 1951. I accepted
and served for the next 35 years.
