Norm Marsh to Kathy Roberts Tony Provenzo Norm Marsh to Kathy Roberts cont— monks provided us some blankets for the night—it would be cool out on
the stone courtyard floor. I began to contemplate how we would ration
our cold C-rations for dinner. What a great surprise to see Frank and his
friends walk in with arms full of bread, wine, and cheese and plenty for
all. Morale made a giant step forward. We dined exceedingly well. Frank
and his buddies had traded some cans of spam and fruit cocktail and
other delicacies from our meager C-rations supply with the local
villagers. It turned out that a very popular item in the C-ration boxes
was the can containing American cigarettes: Chesterfields, Camels,
Lucky Strikes. It didn't seem to matter that these cigarettes were at
least 15 years old. The date stamp on the boxes was 1945. In any event,
our super negotiators kept us in bread, wine, and cheese for the next
couple of days until the ship returned. And then the Fifth Platoon
distinguished itself by locating and retrieving the Suffolk County's
primary anchor in ninety feet of water. But that's another story.
Sincerely, —Norm Marsh. [ top ]

Letter from Tony Provenzo, EM3, TC COR 12/51 Don: Having spent ten years in UDT (1943-1953) I enjoy receiving the Fifties Frogs Newsletter. I was in WWII, UDT-11, then post war UDT-1, and UDT-5 during Korea. Commander L. A. States was our skipper of Team 11 during WWII. Then after the war I stayed in the Navy and UDT. I was on the training staff, shortly after Korea war started. CDR States was called back into the service and we were running him and several others through "refresher Training", he mentioned that a new Team Five was being formed and he was going to be the skipper. Photos from Tony Provenzo, Korea 1952: J D Kelly, Tony on radio, Coxswain H P Smith, behind him Marine?, Skipper L A States, no hat.
I told Him that when Team Five was formed I wanted to switch over to
that team. I then joined Team Five for a tour of Korea. While in Korea
we had another WWII officer join us in Team Five, LT "Truck" Deiner. [ top ] |
