duties,
he just wanted to be sure that the unit was running effectively and the the
PRU Advisor and the PRU operators were not getting into any trouble. On the administration side. The PRU was a part of Detachment Bravo, the detachment consisting
of all the PRUs in I Corps. The PRU Advisor reported administratively to a
SEAL
officer in Can Tho, the detachment Bravo Officer. This officer
normally had at least one tour with a
SEAL
Platoon. Since he was responsible for all 16 PRUs, he did not get to spend a great deal
of time with the PRUs. On some occasions the Detachment Bravo Officer would
go out on operations, but this didn’t happen too often. He normally
just dealt with Administrative matters such
as the PRU advisors pay. service records etc. If a
PRU Advisor was killed in action which happened three times, the Detachment Bravo
Officer was a busy man.

When a
SEAL
team member went to
Vietnam
as a PRU advisor, his check-in
was different depending on when he checked-in Frequently
he would go to
Saigon
and get a CIA briefing. Sometimes he would to to Can Tho to meet the
Detachment Bravo Officer who would then take him to his PRU unit. PRU Advisor
told of an experience where he sent to
Saigon
to check-in with the CIA. PUR Advisor Gary
Shadduck told of an experience check-in with the CIA. He met a CIA
representative that told him if he talked about this program to anyone he
would spend 20 years in “Leavenworth”. Needless to say,
Gary
never forgot that threat. Once the PRU was settled in a province, he was issued an identification card, which he was to use during tour.
